Shahid Khaqan Abbasi was elected Pakistan's new Prime Minister on Tuesday after three-time leader Nawaz Sharif was disqualified by the country’s Supreme Court over a corruption probe last week.

The ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) nominated Abbasi as its candidate for interim prime minister on Saturaday.

Abbasi was elected with 221 votes in the 342-seat National Assembly as the PML-N commands a 209-seat majority in the parliament.

The 58-year-old politician had served as the minister of petroleum and natural resources in Sharif's administration and had spent most of his political life on Sharif's side. He will serve as the country's new prime minister until the next general election takes place.

Nawaz Sharif was ousted from power last Friday, after he failed to declare the source of his family's wealth.

Sharif's younger brother, Shahbaz, who now serves as the chief minister of Punjab Province, was nominated by the PML-N as the ousted PM's successor.

He will first need to be elected to the national assembly before he can take over as prime minister.
