Huang Jiefu, the director of the China Organ Donation and Transplantation Committee, is a prominent organ transplant doctor and the most famous spokesperson for the country's organ transplant industry. In an exclusive interview, our reporter Ge Yunfei spoke with Huang Jiefu about the criticism of China's organ transplant industry as well as the recent controversy about the head transplant surgery that was carried out in the country.
HUANG JIEFU, DIRECTOR CHINA ORGAN DONATION AND TRANSPLANTATION COMMITTEE "We used to be criticized a lot. There are two main reasons. First, some enemies were definitely unhappy with the rise of China. No matter how well you did, they just wouldn't be satisfied. This can't be avoided. But just as I said during last year's World Organ Transplantation Conference, 'we need to keep our friends close and keep our enemies closer.' In the process of development, their criticism also plays a supervisory role for us. And indeed, we have had problems in the past. For years, we did not have a transparent system. The old practice of using organs from executed prisoners didn't follow the guidelines of the World Health Organization. So this was our weakness. So some of the criticism were meant with kindness while some were vicious slander. There is a difference between the two which we need to distinguish."
"Head transplant surgeries have no future, because the regeneration of neurons is still technically impossible. That Italian doctor Sergio Canavero is a notorious expert who was fired by his own hospital. Somehow he found some money to support Harbin Medical University to do the study. Why does he choose China? Do you know what he said? He said China is the country with the lowest level of moral ethics so China could be the first to carry out the the head transplant surgery. Can you accept that? As a Chinese, don't you feel humiliated? China is one of the countries with the highest moral ethics since the era of the Confucius. Some doctors and some universities are hurting the country's reputation. For years China has been criticized for using the organs of prisoners sentenced to death. We banned that practice in 2015. Now, after our international reputation has been improved with great effort, the head transplant surgery happens. Don't you feel angry about that?"
