Russia's Investigative Committee says the death toll caused by a powerful thunderstorm that ripped through Moscow has risen to 16.

The storm, which saw winds reach speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour, was the deadliest recorded since 1998. Over 2,000 cars were damaged by uprooted trees and torn-off roofs. Train services around the region were disrupted, and dozens of flights from Moscow's airports were delayed.

According to Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, 108 people remain in hospital and over 30,000 municipal workers are still dealing with the aftermath of the storm.
