Alipay's newest year-end spending report is based on actual online shopping data. It found that 80 percent of all Alipay transactions were made using mobile payments. The ratio is said to be an all-time high. Mobile use exceeded 90 percent in eleven provinces and regions. A significant jump from just one province in 2016.
Alipay's mobile payment platform was increasingly popular for paying for public transportation. Last year more than 30 cities in China made it possible to buy air and train tickets through Alipay.
Tech consultancy group, Forrester Research, says China's mobile payment market is 90 times larger than the mobile payment market in the United States.
