Along Chaohu Lake in Hefei city, east China’s Anhui Province, over 70 luxury villas have been left unfinished and covered in weeds, with only one 75-year-old janitor surnamed Gao and a dog looking after the huge green expanse of land. /VCG Photo

The villa community was developed in 2009 and received an investment of over 300 million yuan (43.5 million US dollars). However, the premises were abandoned two years ago, waiting for further planning modification. /VCG Photo

Gao and his furry companion have lived in the villa community for seven years. They reside in a bungalow next to the entrance gate, spending every day planting vegetables while looking after construction equipment and materials. /VCG Photo

The villa plot of land is sandwiched between Chaohu Lake and a neat building community, making for a startling contrast with its immediate surroundings. /VCG Photo
