Kim Jong Nam was the eldest son of former DPRK leader Kim Jong Il. He was considered heir apparent to his father and was poised to take over leadership of the country until May 2001, when Kim was at the center of a highly publicized scandal after being caught using a fake passport in an attempt to enter Japan to visit Tokyo Disneyland. Following that incident, he was believed to have fallen out of favor with his father. He spent a significant amount of time living outside the DPRK and became an outspoken critic of his family's regime. In an interview in 2010, he said that he was against third-generation succession, shortly before his half-brother Kim Jong Un succeeded their father.
