Highlight - Why strengthen Party leadership in the Constitutional Amendment?
Obviously, there is a specific statement in the Constitution of the Communist Party of China that the Party is the leader of the country, and this same statement is being put into the Constitution of the country. Besides, a number of other provisions of the Amendment deal with the elements of the Party. Why China is strengthening Party leadership by putting those parts relating to Party into the state Constitution? What is the significance of it? Robert Lawrence Kuhn raised the question with Wang Junfeng, Committee Member of the Constitution and Legislative Affairs Committee of the NPC.

“Strengthening Party leadership among the people for better governance and politics is a core tenet of the system of socialism with Chinese characteristics. China is still a developing country, but the last 40 years of miraculous development have boosted our confidence in the leadership of the Party and the significance of such leadership to our country. Therefore in the “new era”, a further strengthened Party leadership will continue to have tremendous significance, and reflect the will and desire of the country’s entire population. However, this new era will also bring forth more problems and challenges from home and abroad. On such occasions, only a strong Party leadership can pool the will of the whole country and its population for better national development. Furthermore, for a giant country like China, if we do not have a core leadership, or if we fail to strengthen the Party leadership, it will be very difficult to implement the necessary measures.”
