Malaysia is one of the countries where China’s Belt and Road Initiative is helping infrastructure, especially in the transport sector. For Liow Tiong Lai, the country's transport minister and president of the Malaysian-Chinese Association, the Initiative can help create a more interconnected southeast Asia .
“Malaysia's construction of a new high-speed railway has reached a critical stage and we have confidence in China's technology and other support facilities. We also hope that in the future, the railway will connect the entire ASEAN region,” Liow told CGTN ahead of the Belt and Road Forum in Beijing on May 14-15.
“We have a special advantage that Malaysian Chinese maintain Chinese culture, which makes our country a multi-cultural place for investors,” he added.
The theme of the Belt and Road Summit is to strengthen international cooperation while ensuring mutually beneficial outcomes. For Liow, economic and trade development in the region has also encouraged many Malaysian businesses to invest in China, which in turn will boost China's economy, promoting a reciprocal partnership.
