Singer and actor Jay Chou made headlines this week, but not in the way he would have wished.
The Chinese sensation, with a cross-continental fame and fandom, enraged the online community after a video of him angrily scolding a security guard went viral.
The security officer had snatched an LED sign from a fan’s hand and threw it to the ground during Jay Chou’s concert in the city of Xi’an, in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province, on Sunday night.

While the singer’s act had struck a chord with the concert goers, who cheered him coming to the defense of one of his fans, it hit a raw nerve with Chinese netizens, who thought the singer had handled the situation in a wrong way.
“Return the sign to her! Hello, don’t you touch the fan’s sign, do you hear that?” the star rebuked the security personnel. His words were greeted by wild cheers, but he didn’t stop here. “You just do your own job. Why should you throw away her sign? Get out of here!” The crowd, again, fired up.

The singer’s rage towards the guard, however, attracted backlash online. Many criticized him for criticizing someone who was performing his duties.
“Is it justified for one to publicly shame a policeman who was maintaining security? Is this the Jay Chou you want? I can’t understand the fan’s cheers, instead, I feel the bitter disappointment of the policeman on duty,” @fuzhongqianxingright said on China’s Twitter-like Weibo.
“It’s not an easy job to maintain order in a concert, it would be the security personnel’s fault in case of any accidents, there is nothing wrong about (Jay Chou) defending the fans, but please show respect to others as well,” commented another user who goes by the name @ysq.
The singer posted a brief apology on his company’s official Weibo account, followed by 230,000 users, immediately after the concert.
“I said some words impulsively because I felt sorry for the fan, I should apologize to the hard-working guard, I didn’t mean it. I should express my sincere gratitude to all the security personnel who helped keep order at the concert.”

Later, Chou publicly released a video of him apologizing again, and visited the headquarters of the security company to send a letter of apology to the guard.

The singer’s swift response received warm feedback this time around.
“The man who admits and corrects his mistakes should be praised,” user @liwoDimple commented.
“I hope Mr. Chou could learn a good lesson from the incident, and show more respect to all staffers. You should not just think about the fans, but also those who are serving people quietly in the shadows,” another user @zhengshimuzhiyan said.
