Ten people were injured after magma from Sicily's Mount Etna caused an explosion on Thursday. The tourists were drawn to Etna to observe the spectacle of the active volcano erupting and were caught by surprise when its flowing magma hit thick snow causing a phreatic explosion, which followed the heating and expansion of groundwater. Rock and other material rained down upon them.
Mount Etna is an active stratovolcano on the east coast of Sicily, Italy, in the Metropolitan City of Catania, between the cities of Messina and Catania. It is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and is in an almost constant state of activity.
