Donald Trump is visiting Saudi Arabia as his first stop on his first foreign trip as US president.
In Saudi Arabia, Trump will address a summit of Arab and Muslim leaders. He is reportedly going to deliver a speech about the Muslim world during the summit.

1933
The US and Saudi Arabia establish diplomatic ties.

1938
Riyadh and Washington create the world's biggest oil company, Arabian American Oil Company (Aramco).
1945
Then-US President Franklin D. Roosevelt agrees to provide Saudi Arabia with support and military training in exchange for oil rights.
1960
Five oil production nations, including Saudi Arabia, create the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

1973
Saudi Arabia's OPEC embargo against the US for its support of Israel during the October War, results in the skyrocketing of oil prices.
1980
Saudi Arabia completes Aramco buyout, assuming 100 percent control of the company.

Saudi Arabia and the US launch troop buildup "Operation Desert Shield" to protect the kingdom when Iraq invades Kuwait.
1996
Terrorists bomb US military complex, Khobar Towers, in Saudi Arabia. 19 US Air Force personnel are killed and more than 350 service members and civilians are injured.
September 11, 2001
Terrorists hijack civilian airliners and fly them into the World Trade Center Twin Towers in New York, and the Pentagon. 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudi citizens.
2002
The Arab League's 22 members endorse the Saudi-brokered Arab Peace Initiative to end the Arab-Israeli conflict. Then the US praises the "Saudi Initiative".

Trump sets out on the nine-day overseas trip amid controversy back home, where investigations are ongoing into whether his campaign associates collaborated with Russia to sway November's election.
Trump departed on the official visit on Friday alongside first lady Melania Trump, his daughter Ivanka and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, as well as a group of senior advisers and journalists covering the trip.
The president also plans to travel to Israel, the Vatican, Brussels and Sicily.
