China's Belt and Road Initiative is at the center of discussions at this year’s Boao Forum For Asia Annual Conference, in south China's Hainan Province.
In a leaders’ dialogue on Saturday, ministers and investment bankers from Europe and Asia talked about how countries and regions could get involved and benefit from the project.
This included Afghanistan. The country’s finance minister, Eklil Hakimi, said the Belt and Road Initiative should be multilateral, meaning that Asian countries should not only be able to work with China but also with each other, such as Afghanistan’s neighbor Pakistan, a long-term economic partner of China.
India, which is not covered by the initiative, was also keen to clear away doubts before getting involved. Participants said they believed the Belt and Road Initiative should be more than just an economic project.
