We change gears and head off road, and the ongoing Dakar Rally. Monday's stage was canceled due to heavy rains, but the drivers were back on track Tuesday, with Stephane Peterhansel make a push to earn a record-extending 14th title. The Frenchman was leading earlier in the race, but mechanical problems had him stranded for almost two hours, relinquishing the lead to Carlos Sainz. But the veteran has been rock solid since that, and has now moved closer to the leader, after another solid performance in stage 10.
And there is the Frenchman, with his hands at 10-o'clock and 2-o'clock, as we are taught, he would sprint to his second straight stage win. Nasser Al-Attiyah is in second, but eventually finishes in ninth during, partly due to taking wrong turns like this. Get out of the way, here comes Giniel de Villiers running into a camera -- he ends up second in this portion of the race.
Overall leader Carlos Sainz ends up third, but was docked an additional 10 minutes before the stage for "potentially dangerous behaviour" So here are the overall standings Sainz still in front, but his lead that was more than an hour is now just 50 minutes over Peterhansel. Nasser Al-Attiyah is third.
Over on the bikes, Argentina's Kevin Benavides was the early leader, but he, like many other riders, would have some navigation issues and eventually strayed off course, affecting his overall time. American Toby Price also fell victim to some shoddy navigation skills, and that sees him tumble down the standings.
Overnight leader Adrian van Beveren would suffer a fall three kilometres from the finish, you don't see it in the highlights, but that means he is out of the race. So that allows Austria's Matthias Walkner to win stage 10 and take the overall lead. Joan Barreda of Spain is now second more than a half hour off the pace.
