Another strong quake to hit Hualien within three days.
"Our houses have collapsed. The houses have collapsed and we are trying to evacuate." The earthquake on the night of February 6 was felt across Taiwan, damaging four buildings and some roads. Fire officials said up to 16 people were trapped in a residential building and two people were trapped inside the Marshal Hotel in Hualien. Taiwan authorities are now racing against the clock to rescue the missing people trapped in the collapsed buildings.
FU KUN-CHI HUALIEN COUNTY MAGISTRATE "Because from the fifth floor down, that's floor 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 are all underground. So our rescue workers need to break through each floor to see if we can save these people during this critical period. So now is the toughest time."
But there is bad news for the rescue workers. Since February 4, about 100 earthquakes have jolted the area, and Taiwan's earthquake experts say more quakes may hit in the coming weeks.
