Abiye Ahmed was sworn in as prime minister of Ethiopia on Monday with a mandate to implement democratic reforms.

The reforms aim to defuse ethnic tension in Oromiya province, which surrounds the capital Addis Ababa. Violence has rocked the province since 2015. It's been fuelled largely by young members of the country's largest ethnic group the Oromos who face economic and political marginalization. The ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front picked Abiye last week to replace Hailemariam Desalegn who quit to clear the way for reforms.
