We begin right here in Beijing, where China's National Development and Reform Commission has just held a press conference as the National People's Congress meets. The economic planning body's top officials answered questions regarding macroeconomic control and high quality development.
NDRC Chairman He Lifeng said structural reform made great progress last year and the economic performance was stable. This year, consumption could contribute to nearly 60 percent or even more to economic growth. The NDRC is confident that this year's GDP growth target of 6.5 percent can be achieved. Vice Chairman Ning Jizhe said that China will continue to cut over capacity. The production of steel will be reduced by 30 million tons and coal by 150 million tons this year. The officials also briefed the media on policies including on attracting foreign investment and poverty alleviation, which involves the relocation 2.8 million people.
