China has announced plans to create a free trade port in Hainan Province. For years, the Communist Party of China has been supporting Hainan in deepening reform and opening-up. The aim is to make the region a model of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era. CGTN's He Weiwei has more.
China's largest special economic zone, Hainan Province is taking a step forward with the establishment of a free trade port. Compared to existing free trade zones, a free trade port enjoys greater freedom in policy making, and is more open in terms of market access.
HE WEIWEI YANGPU PORT, HAINAN PROVINCE "This year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of Hainan province. For its rapid development, reform and opening-up is the key word. The announcement of a free trade port here will definitely bring more momentum to the province's economic growth."
ZHANG YANSHENG CHINA CENTER FOR INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC EXCHANGES "For the past three decades, Hainan has made a 'miracle'. The province is as good as any moderately developed economy in terms social development, transportation, infrastructure construction."
There are five major ports in Hainan. Local government is working on integrating them, to make better use of their capacities and strengthen the province's regional and international shipping business.
CHI FULIN, DIRECTOR CHINA (HAINAN PROVINCE) INSTITUTE FOR REFORM & DEVELOPMENT "In the future, Hainan will play a leading role in opening up many sectors such as the service industry, and become a pioneer in reform and innovation. That will attract more business opportunities to the province."
