Chinese President Xi Jinping has met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in central China's Wuhan city. The informal visit is the first by an Indian prime minister since 1988. President Xi said he hopes their meeting could open a new chapter in bilateral ties. CGTN's Chuck Tinte has the story.
Xi Jinping greeted prime minister Narendra Modi at Central China's Hubei provincial museum. During the meeting, Xi said they reached various key consensus for the past three years. He also said the positive results reflected their will to expand cooperation and boost mutual development, as the world's two largest emerging economies.
Touching on bilateral relations, Xi stressed the need to strengthen ties at a strategic level, saying both countries will work together to build a closer partnership in all areas.
As the two leaders viewed antique Chinese artifacts, they discussed ways to boost dialogue between the two ancient civilizations and how to live peacefully together.
Xi said the two civilizations have much in common and called for a joint commitment to respect cultural diversities and revive Eastern civilization.
Modi said cultural exchanges between both countries date back centuries and stressed the need to increase mutual understanding and jointly deal with global challenges.
The prime minister hailed the ice-breaking meeting as historic, and also invited President Xi for an informal summit in India next year. Chuck Tinte, CGTN.
