Watch: Man builds two-story home out of 8,500 beer bottles Li Rongjun’s home is a beer lover’s dream – and a toast to frugal building. The architecture college graduate spent four months making himself a two-story, 29-square-meter house with more than 8,500 recycled beer bottles incorporated into its walls in Qijiang county, southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality. Li rebuilt an abandoned kiln, completing the crumbling walls with a wire mesh filled with the beer bottles, rocks and concrete. Green-tinged sunlight now pours through the old lager bottles in a home that cost around 70,000 yuan (10,105 US dollars) to complete. The average house price in Qijiang was around 3,500 yuan per square meter in 2016. The home was completed in 2015, with a video of the boozy architecture released recently. Li says he wants to launch a startup business making similar buildings elsewhere, though experienced architects have told local media they doubt the stability of his work and his business prospects. Oh well, even if Li’s startup doesn’t succeed, he will at least have plenty of opportunity to drown his sorrows.
