China has also been investing in young people in Africa. Its aim is to promote development of professional skills and education on the continent. Kenyan youth are some of the beneficiaries of the technology transfer.
The launch of the Chinese-funded Mombasa-Nairobi railway in Kenya necessitated the need to train more locals. The training has since helped the country bridge skills gap in a rapidly evolving mode of transport. It also allows Kenya to have a pool of expertise once the foreign contractors depart. According to China Communications Construction Company Limited, there are over 5,000 trained Kenyan technical personnel.
SUN YIHONG HEAD SURVEYOR, SGR PHASE II "We have been imparting our skills and technologies to local young people, as we hope that our skills and technologies will stay here even after we leave."
The trainees have come in handy in the sustainable running of the new Mombasa-Nairobi railway.
JAMES MACHARIA KENYAN TRANSPORT CABINET SECRETARY "That Chinese collaboration is very valuable to us. Both in terms of skills development but technology transfer. When you have the Chinese instructors training our youngsters, whether to drive the trains or operator the machines, you are creating a base of skilled youngsters because you can see the countries surrounding Kenya they're behind in terms of implementation of the projects."
While the train has opened doors for opportunities, it has also cut travel time from Nairobi to Mombasa by half. Its also estimated to have boosted the country's GDP by 1.5 percent. Mahia Mutua CGTN.
