The Shanghai Olympic Expo opened in the Shanghai Tower over the weekend, bringing Olympic torches, medals, posters and commemorative coins to the city for the first time. International Olympic Committee Vice-President Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr. and Chinese Olympic champions attended the opening ceremony. Sun Caiqin takes a look.
Olympic torches from 2008 Beijing Games, 2004 Athens Games, and even the 1936 Berlin Games are on display. There's also a good selection of Olympic medals, posters and stamps spanning several decades. The launch ceremony was attended by Samaranch Jr. and Chinese Olympic champions Deng Yaping, Wang Liqin, Zou Shiming, Yang Yang and more.
JUAN ANTONIO SAMARANCH JR. IOC VICE PRESIDENT "It's a celebration of Olympism, and anticipation of the big success of Beijing 2022. China is a very Olympic country, it's the second time China is going to host Olympic games, after very successful 2008. We are looking forward, we have a lot of support and a lot of friends in the Chinese Olympic movement here, and we feel very much at home so it's great to be here."
The exhibition marks the 10th anniversary of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and promotes the 2022 Winter Olympic Games that will be held in Beijing. Professional boxer Zou Shiming said he experienced a mix of feelings while viewing the exhibits.
ZOU SHIMING PROFESSIONAL BOXER "I won the gold medal in the Olympic Games in 2008 and 2012, later won the gold belt in WBO games. For athletes, I feel every moment is worth remembering. The effort, blood and tears that athletes endure are unseen by the public. The exhibition shows the development of world sports and Chinese sports."
Organizers said the exhibition will be held in other Chinese cities after Shanghai. Visitors who purchase a ticket to Shanghai Tower's observation deck gain free access to the exhibition, which runs until January 31st, 2019. Sun Caiqin for CGTN.
