The south coast of the Kenyan city Diani has been a mainstay for watersports in the region. Curious learners or seasoned professionals flock to the area to take part in the adrenaline-packed activities. CGTN'S Mahia Mutua went to Diani Watersports to find out more.
Sun, sea, sand and the thrill of water sport. Here at Diani Beach, south of Mombasa, enthusiasts harness the power of wind and surf for their favorite action sports.
At Diani Watersports, a variety of disciplines are on offer, including kite surfing, windsurfing, paddling and body boarding, both for lessons and for more experienced practitioners.
Despite the majority of customers coming from abroad, this venue is registering more and more local clients curious to take part.
NANCYROSE PFISTER MANAGER, DIANI WATERSPORTS "Mostly, our biggest number of client is Europeans though Africans have started getting in slowly but surely, but mostly we get Europeans. We have other clients who just come planlessly and when they see people doing it, they get interest and they come."
OMAR ALI INSTRUCTOR, KITE SURFING "So we just teach them from the beginning until the time when they cover like - because kite-surfing is a 6 hours course, so when he or she covers the 6 hours, you'll find that he can ride up and down, so what will follow is to keep practicing, practicing until you become better. As you know that make practicing, you always to perfect."
The activities vary due to weather, with kite-surfing season open from end of December to April and the second half of June to August. Windsurfing, kayaking and stand-up paddling, however, are available throughout the year.
NANCYROSE PFISTER MANAGER, DIANI WATERSPORTS "I would say, like passion for any other sport like football or running, water sports are also fun. For kids, it keeps the kids busy and it gives them passion and then it's enjoyable for the whole family. All the family can do it - fathers, mothers, children. And again, if you've never tried it you'll never know, so I'll urge people to take that step of trying it! And then it's also an addiction. When you start, you'll never stop."
The combination of the ideal weather, favorable conditions and readily-available equipment make it apparent why many are willing to return.
STEPHEN BACHMANN FOIL SURFER "First time I've been here was 1996 for a bicycle tour and since then I probably comeback every year for a couple of months. It's my second base here."
MAHIA MUTUA DIANI, KENYA "It goes without saying that water sports, much like the tide here, is on the rise and showing no sign of slowing down. Mahia Mutua for CGTN, Diani, Mombasa."
