Torres was among a golden generation for Spain, that captured the country's first World Cup. Another star hoping to do the same this year, is Lionel Messi, as he leads Argentina at the tournament in Russia this summer. Messi's home country is also in position to host the football showpiece, as Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay are putting forward a joint bid for the 2030 edition, and sports officials in the South American nation say the Barcelona star is being asked to offer his support for the bid.
CARLOS MacALLISTER ARGENTINA SPORTS SECRETARY "We talked about various issues and explained that in 2030 we are probably not going to be in the place we are in now, but Messi will continue to be who he is and he will surely be our icon for that World Cup. For Uruguay, it will be Suarez or the star they choose. Messi showed a great willingness to help us in all this. We will be working on ensuring these three countries end up organizing the World Cup in 2030."
WILMAR VALDEZ URUGUAY F.A. PRESIDENT "What the three of us know very clearly is that the investment in infrastructure to host a World Cup with 48 national teams is important. But also the three countries know that they can benefit greatly from such an undertaking in 2030 and know that rising to that challenge is a dream that needs to be realized."
