From subways to high-speed railways, "made-in-China" trains and their various parts have quickly earned recognition around the world. The China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation is one of the companies behind the huge success in "exporting" Chinese transportation systems. ZOU YUE visited one of the CRRC's subsidiaries in Qingdao to see how high-speed trains are manufactured.
This is the most Popular Chinese brand. And it makes trains. CRRC was the number one train maker in China and ranked first among the most popular brands according to the World Influential Organization. Their products have now been sold in more than 100 countries across the world. And the company's global sales increased from 2 billion dollars in 2011 to just over 8 billion in 2016, a jump of 30 percent every year. Their inroads into the world market started underground. They made thousands of subway cars a year and the sales became the company's major exports overseas. In March 2016, CRRC Sifang, a Qingdao-based subsidiary, secured a contract with the Chicago Transit Authority, to supply 850 new subway cars. that is half of the city's total. Up until now, CRRC has won bids in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles and Philadelphia.
XIANYI JIANG DEPUTY TECHNICAL DIRECTOR, CRRC "We are ready to provide the service for the United States and we are ready to provide the best vehicles for the state as well. Believe us, we can provide the best vehicles, we can provide the best technology for the United States."
In addition, CRRC is following the Belt and Road initiative. They want to build bulletin trains overseas to follow on their domestic success. The Jakarta-Bandung Railway project marks the beginning of China's high-speed railways going global. As most countries along the Belt and Road-especially in Southeast Asia, Central Asia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe-are planning to build connectivity fast and big, they are seeking partners and business models everywhere in the world and CRRC has proved it is a strong contender.
