One of the biggest weeks in the video gaming world is underway: E3, The Electronic Entertainment Expo. And there's big news for Nintendo fans. Two major announcements so far - helping the company soar, by some estimates, to a value of about 910 million dollars. CGTN's Phil Lavelle reports.
E3 wouldn't be the same without Nintendo. This firm's been up and down more than Mario over the decades. On the up now though. Let's gloss over the likes of the Gamecube and the Wii U. Because the Switch - just over a year old now - seems to have switched its fortunes around. And now Nintendo's cranking it up even more with big announcements. One of them - it's taking Fortnite. The phenomenon that's sweeping the world. Said to be making more than 200 million dollars a month for its owners. Now available in China. And now available on Nintendo's flagship device, too.
PHIL LAVELLE LOS ANGELES "Is this really going to make much difference to the number of people playing Fortnite Because it seems like everybody is playing it already."
MIKE ROUGEAU SENIOR EDITOR, GAMESPOT "I think it's just going to make it easier to play Fortnite. I think a lot of people playing Fortnite are playing on their phones. It's a lot of students. Ask any teacher and Fortnite is an epidemic in classrooms. Playing Fortnite on a Switch rather than on a phone, just with those proper controls is right off the bat a better experience, so I think it's going to make Fortnite better for a lot of people."
PHIL LAVELLE LOS ANGELES "Nintendo is a company with portable gaming running through its DNA. It's been making devices like this since the very early days. Which explains why its put so much into the Switch. And the Switch now helping it move into another key arena."
That is the E-Sports revolution. Nintendo may not be considered one of the big players yet. Could its other big announcement - Super Smash Brothers Ultimate - change that.
MIKE ROUGEAU SENIOR EDITOR, GAMESPOT "They talked about this game for so long during this presentation, it really does feel like they're thinking about the hardcore base."
PHIL LAVELLE LOS ANGELES "Is Nintendo in a good position to adopt E-Sports To push that forward."
JASON FANELLI VIDEO GAMES JOURNALIST "I think they are. Super Smash Bros which was just revealed yesterday, leans on all of those established IPs - you've got Mario, you've got Legend of Zelda, you've got the Ocean, you have Starfox which sometimes doesn't get the screen time it deserves and that's the only place you can see it, so bring in all of those people who like those franchises and then you have all of those who are good at SSB, bring them together, you could have tournaments that would sell out arenas around the world if they wanted to."
And so, for Nintendo's loyal following another exciting year ahead. This staple of the games industry aiming to get one up on the competition. Phil Lavelle, CGTN, at E3 in Los Angeles.
