17-year-old Palestinian Ahed Tamimi has been released from prison after serving an 8 month sentence. She was jailed for slapping two Israeli soldiers. After her release, she spoke about the controversial detainment, and vowed to fight against Israel's illegal occupation. Stephanie Freid reports.
Ahed Tamimi served her 8 months and in the early hours of Sunday morning. Israel's prison authority released her back to her family and her friends, who were over joyed to see Tamimi going free. She was also quite emotional at times, crying when she was reunited with some of the family and friends. Later she toured the west bank, toured Ramala, visiting former Palestinian President's grave site. And now going for a one on one visit with current Palestinian President Abbas. And then she went out for ice cream. After that she came back to her home town, to the place where the famous viral video of her slapping and kicking a soldier, that's the video that landed her in prison for 8 months. She went back home where that all happened, held a conference there.
Among her plans for the future, Ahed Tamimi said she learned a lot while she was in prison. And with the courage and wisdom, she said she gained a maturity, she's going to go forward and earn a degree in law, and she's going to fight on behalf of the Palestinian people via the court via the UN. Let's take a listen to some of the things that Ahed Tamimi said she gained in prison.
AHED TAMIMI FREED PALESTINIAN TEENAGER "Prison taught me a lot of things, in prison I was able to figure out the right way to deliver the message of homeland. The prison taught me how to be patient, and how to be part of a team. It taught me to love life, because in prison, people feel that the small things a valuable."
Ahed Tamimi spent those 8 months in prison as a lesson or a warning to other Palestinians against any sort of violence, or coming up against or confronting Israeli soldiers, her attorney told me today that she believes that Ahed Tamimi will not go away, she's not going to back down, she may fight via the legal system in the future.
