On December 31, 2016, CGTN was launched.
From its headquarters in the iconic CCTV tower in Beijing, its goal was to bring a new and different perspective to world affairs as well as Chinese issues.
Over the past year, its reporters have gone on to cover fighting in Syria, typhoons in southeast Asia and the launch of China’s Tianzhou-1 cargo spacecraft.
Highlights have also included the 19th CPC National Congress, Xi Jinping’s headline-making speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos and US President Donald Trump’s visit to China, as well as 20th anniversary celebrations of Hong Kong’s return to China and the Belt and Road Forum in Beijing.
More than just a broadcaster, China Global Television Network has invested heavily in digital media, bringing you news on an array of platforms, from Twitter and Facebook, to Weibo, WeChat and CGTN’s own app and website.
From headquarters in Beijing and regional hubs in Washington and Nairobi, staff work around the clock to provide 24-hour news coverage to an increasingly connected global audience, in the form of breaking news, reports, short videos and livestreams.
Commentary pieces and talk shows try to make sense of the news.
Here is a quick recap of CGTN’s first year.
