'City in A Breath': Multimedia show lights up Beijing Design Week
Updated 11:05, 09-Sep-2019
A dazzling light show on Thursday night brought the old gas tank at Beijing's 798 Art Zone to life, allowing visitors to unleash and discover at the same time. Titled 'City in a Breath', the show is part of the Beijing Design Week. Sun Wei take us there.
The giant gas tank seemed like a spaceship left by aliens, as contemporary artist Ding Dong and sound artist Soulspeak were determined to build a dreamlike city that would exist for only 240 hours.
Featuring light, electricity, music and sound, installation work is the latest in Ding's "Nihility" series.
The artist hopes visitors can be led into a dream where they unleash all the emotions hidden within their bodies.
DING DONG STAGE DIRECTOR & CONTEMPORARY ARTIST "It's the fifth edition of our 'Nihility' installation. It's about a timeless dream, which is a running theme of the series. I hope those viewing it could get lost in time, forget the past and all about themselves. To make a new time begin, they have to spin hard. All the emotions are swallowed up, but hope is still there."
More than 200 laser lights and soul-deterring music fill the 17-meter high dome. All coordinated by man and machine. It's said to be the largest single installation ever created in China.
The installation runs through September 16th.
SUN WEI BEIJING "The show ushers in the 2019 Beijing Design Week which raised its curtain on September 5th and runs through October 7th. Themed with 'Industrial Initiative', this year's edition features nearly a thousand creative cultural events. There are 45 branch venues in 10 districts of Beijing, allowing local people to experience the power of design in their neighborhood. SW, CGTN, Beijing."
