In South Africa, students from six universities across the country have been battling it out at a Chinese proficiency competition in Durban. The winners will have the chance to travel to China next month to compete against other global finalists. Let's take a look.
20 of South Africa's best Confucius Institute students entered the 17th Chinese Proficiency Competition in Durban.
The theme for this year's international competition was 'one world, one family'.
For over 4 hours students demonstrated their skills in writing, a themed speech and a talent show.
Ilse Smit from the University of Johannesburg, and Kyle Matthew Nash from the University of Cape Town, emerged as the overall winners.
In June, they will join other finalists from around the world to compete in China. In second place was Mzomuhle Ntshangase, from the Durban University of Technology.
"I'm very happy, I mean you could see the level of Mandarin, that they've learnt, at least they are able to express themselves."
Confucius Institutes can be found at leading universities across the globe.
Here, students can learn Mandarin and gain a deeper understanding of Chinese culture.
