Other African nations are welcoming Zuma's decision to resign. The African Union said the move is "commendable", as it helps to ease the political tension in South Africa. CGTN's Girum Chala has more.
GIRUM CHALA ADDIS ABABA "The resignation of Jacob Zuma is no shocker here at the African Union commission. And AU authorities say the peaceful conclusion of the political anxiety in South Africa is commendable."
For the AU what happened in South Africa is more or less similar to the inter-party dynamics in Zimbabwe which led the stepping down of Robert Gabriel Mugabe after almost 4 decades in power.
AU authorities here say the transition in South Africa is also constitutional and does not breach any of its principles especially that of the African charter on democracy, election and governance.
Moreover what is more important for the African Union is the respect of the will of the people and the democratic way South African officials followed to address the need of removing President Zuma from power.
We have heard the AU has been closely following unfolding in South Africa;from ANC's request for the President to step aside to the preparation of the country's parliament to stage vote no confident against Mr. Jacob Zuma.
According to AU's political affairs department in fact as the AU discourages unconstitutional changes of government,it strongly supports and cheers changes done under the rule of law. Girum Chala, CGTN, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
