China is taking some of the world's biggest steps toward bringing 5G to fruition. It's often called the next generation of wireless technology. In an expo on Information Communication Technology this week in Beijing, details were released on that progress. CGTN's Zheng Yibing reports.
On the brink of the 5G era, the term is the hottest topic at this ICT expo in Beijing. What's more, China's progress in 5G technology has grown by leaps and bounds since the first such test in 2016.
XU FEI MEMBER, CHINA ACADEMY OF ICT "We have basically completed the non-standalone tests and have fully begun standalone tests on 5G."
What she says are two versions of standard 5G, the former is based on the current 4G network, and the latter on the new 5G system. It shows the transition of the big leap. But in fact, progress is coming along faster than expected.
CAI YUEMIN DEPUTY CHIEF DESIGNER, DATANG TELECOM "Since the standalone standard was set in June, the system's terminal units have realized the basic functions it has prescribed."
The 5G test is slated to finish by the end of November, and foreign companies like Ericsson, Qualcomm, Nokia and Intel, are joining hands to make it happen.
AIDY ZHANG VICE PRESIDENT OF NOKIA "We're hand in hand with the whole eco-system partners to push the whole ecosystem moving forward."
With testing underway in China and elsewhere, experts are developing future use cases for 5G. They cover various fields, from smart driving to production, to an intelligent city and streaming of virtual reality.
ZHU HUIMIN 5G GLOBAL VICE PRESIDENT, HUAWEI "With the help of 5G, we can better provide the performance and enhance the efficiency. So lots of potential and opportunities out there."
SONG MENG ENGINEER, CHINA UNICOM "Mature 5G applications I believe will be here by 2020. And now we're conducting trials in 16 key cities in China."
ZHENG YIBING BEIJING "5G testing puts users closer to system commercialization. And usage development is happening faster and faster. That means a quick, convenient future based on the technology about to be at hand. Zheng Yibing, CGTN, Beijing."
