We start in the United States where a wave of suspicious packages, some containing explosives, have been sent to the homes of top Democrats and the CNN news network. Among the targets are former President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hilary Clinton. The FBI is analyzing the explosive devices. CGTN White House correspondent Jessica Stone reports.
FBI officials say almost all the packages appeared to be 'crude pipe bombs' addressed to vocal critics of U.S. President Donald Trump.
The FBI says the intended recipients included billionaire Democratic party donor, George Soros, and Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton-at their New York homes, Former President Barack Obama at his Washington, DC home, Democratic Congresswoman Maxine Waters at her office. Obama's Attorney General, Eric Holder-though that package never reached him. It went instead to the Florida office Debbie Wasserman-Schultz- former chairman of the Democratic National Committee.
CNN's New York offices received a package addressed to former CIA Director John Brennan. Brennan is a contributor to rival cable network, MSNBC. New York Police say a CNN mailroom employee discovered the suspicious package that also contained a so-far unidentified white powder. New York Democratic governor Andrew Cuomo also announced his Manhattan office received a suspicious package.
ANDREW CUOMO GOVERNOR OF NEW YORK "This has been a circumstance of being who we are and where we are. We are New York and we are an international icon. And for some we are an international target."
JAMES O'NEILL NEW YORK CITY POLICE COMMISSIONER "We've seen this before. And we've seen worse. And we will not be intimidated. And we will bring these perpetrators to justice."
JESSICA STONE WHITE HOUSE "Because these packages were sent to so many vocal critics of the president, there is a tremendous amount of interest in what he would have to say. He kind went off-script at one point, giving personal emotions, saying he was angry upset and unhappy about what happened this morning."
DONALD TRUMP US PRESIDENT "The full weight of our government is being deployed to conduct this investigation and bring those responsible for these despicable acts to justice. We will spare no resources or expense in this effort. And I just want to tell you that in these times, we have to unify. We have to come together and send one very clear strong unmistakable message that acts or threats of political violence of any kind have no place in the United States of America."
Trump ended the day back on the campaign trail in a Wisconsin-at an event where he typically criticizes the Democratic Party and the media. So far, all of his non-media targets have been Democrats. Jessica Stone, CGTN, Washington.
