Sunday's crash is the most recent aviation disaster to hit Iran since 2014. Let's look at how exactly it took place.
The Aseman Airlines passenger jet was traveling from Tehran to the southwestern city of Yasuj. It took off at 4.30 GMT. And just 45 minutes later, it disappeared from radar. Shortly after that, the plane crashed on the Dena Mountain, near the city of Semirom. The crash site is about 22 kilometers from the flight's intended destination.
Sixty passengers, two security guards, two flight attendants, a pilot and co-pilot were on board.
The crashed plane, an ATR 72, is a 25-year-old twin-engine turboprop used for short-distance regional flying. The jet was brought back into service only months ago after being grounded for years. The French-Italian-made plane has a history of icing issues and was forbidden by the US from flying under icy conditions in 1994 - though the ban was lifted later. It remains unclear what caused the recent crash in Iran.
