Education has been an indispensable part of Hubei's transformation and, for more than a century, Wuhan University has been one of the most important and beautiful institutions of higher learning in the country. Nestled atop the scenic Luojia Hill, its campus is heavily wooded and green, with fragrant flowers everywhere all year round. CGTN's Li Jianhua takes you on a bicycle tour of this historic school.
LI JIANHUA WUHAN "Hello, and welcome to Wuhan University, a university known for its palatial buildings blending Chinese and western styles. This university is renowned for its beautiful campuses and rich history, so without further ado, let's go take a look."
LI JIANHUA WUHAN "Wuhan University has a huge campus. It's very much like a small town, so a bike is practically necessary if studying here."
LI JIANHUA WUHAN "Here, we have come to one of the oldest buildings in the school and this is a dormitory, though it doesn't seem to be one, at least not to me. The joint dorm building was literally built on a hill, with a history of about a hundred years. Walking here feels like a step into the past and these students living here are a bit behind the times."
LI JIANHUA WUHAN "Riding a bike at this university is a strenuous climb because the campus is basically on a hill. One of Wuhan University's visual appeals is its cherry blossoms. If we came here in March, we'd have a different view, with cherry blossoms falling off the trees, quite fairytale-like."
LI JIANHUA WUHAN "Wuhan University stretches along the East Lake of the city. This little body of water behind me is part of the East Lake, and it has become a popular place for students to rest, which not many universities in the country could afford to have."
LI JIANHUA WUHAN "The university dates back to the Ziqiang Institute in 1893. Back then, only four courses were provided, including Chinese, Mathematics, Nature and Business. Over the years, it changed its name several times before it was named the (new) Wuhan University in 2000 after merging with three other universities. Now it has over 40 schools and nearly 60-thousand students. LJH, CGTN, AT WUHAN UNIVERSITY, HUBEI PROVINCE."
