Sports Scene is back with a look ahead to this Saturday's UEFA Champions League Final. Real Madrid are not satisfied with simply having the most trophies of any club in this competition. The 12-time winners from Spain endured a mediocre season in La Liga, but played their best football on the European stage to reach the continental final for the third straight year. Now only Liverpool stand in the way of a historic three-peat in Kiev. Al Goodman has more from the team's Media Day event.
Real Madrid, training before the final in Kiev on Saturday. For Los Blancos, a date with destiny. No team has won the Champions League trophy three times in a row. Real Madrid won it the last three out of four, including the last two trophies. Now, with a real shot for the record books. Blasting their way into the finals after beating powerful European rivals PSG, Juventus, and Bayern. Manager Zinedine Zidane knows Liverpool hasn't been to the final for 11 years, but insists they're not more motivated.
ZINEDINE ZIDANE REAL MADRID COACH "Nobody can say we are less hungry than our rivals. We are Real Madrid, and we always want more, and we're going to try to get it in the best way."
What's the key to victory for Real Madrid? We asked the players.
GARETH BALE REAL MADRID FORWARD "Ah, score more goals than the other team. We know it's going to be a very difficult game. Obviously, both teams are there on merit, and it's about who deals with the occasion the best."
LUKA MODRIC REAL MADRID MIDFIELDER "To all players to be their best, on a higher level. To play our game, like we did all season, and hopefully this will be enough to win another Champions League."
But Liverpool, under manager Juergen Klopp, beat Manchester City and Roma to reach the Final. Real Madrid have been studying closely.
KARIM BENZEMA REAL MADRID FORWARD "Everyone, I think, talks about their attack, that they score a lot of goals. But I think it's their teamwork. If I have to pick a strong point, it's their attack."
GARETH BALE REAL MADRID FORWARD "They press very hard. We know kind of how Juergen Klopp's team work, and obviously we'll do our homework. We'll prepare for them this week like we do for any other team, and go into the Final with confidence."
AL GOODMAN MADRID "Real Madrid's arch-rival Barcelona already won the Spanish league and the Spanish Cup this season, which just increases the pressure on Real Madrid to win the Championship League, or finish without any of the three coveted trophies."
But Real Madrid players insist they don't see it that way.
KARIM BENZEMA REAL MADRID FORWARD "We don't talk about Barcelona. They do things for themselves, and we keep our eyes on our team, period."
LUKA MODRIC REAL MADRID MIDFIELDER "No, we never look another team at what they did. We are concentrated on ourselves, what we are doing, what we have to do."
And what they have to do, many say, is to play the Real Madrid way. Expect Cristiano Ronaldo, the star striker, to cause problems for Liverpool. Expect Real Madrid to pounce on every chance at a counterattack. High expectations for Los Blancos, as they take a step closer to a chance to make football history. Al Goodman, CGTN, Madrid.
