The incident has raised an online ruckus after the shocking video went viral on China’s Twitter-like Weibo. While many netizens slammed the officer’s violent misconduct for wrestling down the woman and injuring the baby, some have blamed the woman.
“The police officers should give priority to the security of people and take safety measures for the child before restraining the woman,” @kuangrenaguang commented on Weibo, adding it is also unacceptable that both cops have remained indifferent to the baby after she was slammed to the ground.
“Though the officer should be blamed for the aggressive demeanor, the woman should also be punished for endangering the child by interrupting the policemen and pushing an officer at first,” @taoyingcai noted.

In response to the growing online backlash, Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Public Security on Friday made a statement following a preliminary investigation, saying the police officer has been suspended from all duties and an investigation has been launched.
“The police officer’s brutal behavior to restrain the woman was wrong”, reads the statement released Friday by the Bureau on its official Weibo account, adding it will further regulate police enforcement and comprehensively improve its public service.
