And now, it's time for China 24's special series - 'Chinese Terminology'. We help explain the magnitude of China's reform and opening up through certain well-known phrases. Today, our Jonathan Betz looks at the term 'duoshoudang'.
When hearing the word, some might think it's about gangsters who cut off people's hands. But actually 'duoshoudang', which means hand-cutting party in Chinese, refers to a breed of online shopping addicts. The tongue-in-cheek term literally means 'the gang who vow to cut their own hands off'. The term arises as China's e-commerce and express delivery industry has taken off at blazing speeds. Every day, about 100-million express parcels are delivered across the country. During last year's 'Double-12 Shopping Spree' holiday, China's State Post Bureau reported nearly a quarter of a billion express packages were ordered on that day alone. These 'duoshoudang' who've gone trigger happy at an online sale and have no money for food now, say they are contemplating cutting off their hands to control the addiction. Sounds dramatic, but it's also a warning. The internet is a store that never closes. So for these duoshoudang, it's best to keep your hands off the keyboards.
