Hong Kong: In the eyes of a British businessman
[]
Hong Kong is a melting pot of cultures, with expatriates from all over the world living in the city.
Alan Stroud is one of those expats. He first came to Hong Kong when as a member of the British royal marine in the 1970s.
After he left the forces, he took up a job as an engineer with the Hong Kong fire service.
He has remained in Asia ever since, with more than 20 years in Hong Kong.
Stroud now lives 80 kilometers away in southern China, where he runs a shop selling British food, which has become popular amongst expats and locals alike.
His shop and restaurant "Alan’s World" is in Dongguan, just across the border in the Chinese mainland, where his culinary art has attracted not just the home-sick Europeans, but also Chinese as well.
Alan believes China’s “One Country, Two Systems” policy for Hong Kong has been a success.
"I think it is working relatively well to be honest, there will always be hiccups on both sides as it all comes into place and smooths out."
"It’s always been a rush rush city. Hong Kong is one of the only cities where you go for a 100-meter walk and end up walking for 600 meters, because you can’t walk in a straight line, that’s Hong Kong," said Alan.
