Zhongwei City in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region has made tremendous achievements in desertification control since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) held five years ago.
Northwest of the city is part of China's Tengger Desert, which had been only five kilometers away from the city. Through continued desertification control efforts, the desert has retreated to 20 kilometers away.
Due to effective measures, the city, which was often shrouded by sandstorms, has seen the climate improved with more vegetative cover.
Shapotou District, on the southeastern edge of Tengger Desert, has successfully controlled desertification on an area of 273 square kilometers in the past five years, accounting for half of such achievement in the past 60 years.
The success can be attributed to both abundant funds support and advanced technology, among which straw checkerboard barriers has made the most remarkable breakthrough.
Though in small dimensions and operated quite easily, the straw checkerboard barriers have been very effective.
The experience of desertification control in Ningxia has been shared across the country and the rest of the world, as a model in desertification control and promoting harmonious coexistence between people and desert.
