A South African tourist was killed and 12 other people injured after a sightseeing balloon carrying 20 people crashed near Egypt's southern city of Luxor on Friday, AFP reported citing a health ministry official.

Sharif Wadie, the assistant health minister in charge of emergency services, said there were no other casualties but did not elaborate on the extent of the passengers' injuries.

Officials said the incident was caused by strong winds that forced the balloon off course above the city.
