China and India should see each other as development opportunities not threats, Chinese President Xi Jinping told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday.
The Chinese leader pointed out peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation is the "only correct choice" for China and India. Xi hoped India could have a correct and rational view of China’s development.
Modi agreed that both sides should not regard each other as rivals but to make cooperation as the mainstream of bilateral relations.
The two leaders met in the southeastern Chinese city of Xiamen after the 9th BRICS summit and the Dialogue of Emerging Market and Developing Countries.
Xi stressed that China and India are important neighbors and also two of the largest developing countries and emerging markets. In this case, healthy and stable Sino-Indian relations accord with both sides’ fundamental interests and meet common expectations of the region and international society as well.
In recent years, bilateral relations have made a rapid progress based on a consensus over the Sino-Indian development reached by the two leaders. Xi added, both sides agreed to build a closer partnership and set the clear long term goal of developing Sino-Indian relations.
Xi told Modi, China is willing to work with India on the basis of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, which were put forward by both countries to improve political mutual trust, promote mutually beneficial cooperation, and push Sino-Indian ties in the right direction.
