Some 600 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa entered Spanish territory in North Africa on Thursday after storming a double fence between Morocco and the Spanish enclave Ceuta. It was the biggest single assault on the fence, topped with razor wire, since February 2017. Security forces kept another 200 migrants out. CGTN was the only international media on the scene and Al Goodman reports from Ceuta.
These are the unlucky stragglers. These sub-Saharan African migrants still on the fence, trying to enter the Spanish territory of Ceuta on Morocco's north coast. But when they come down, some are returned immediately to Morocco. A failed attempt.
But these are the lucky ones, some of the 600 migrants who successfully breached the fence and entered Spain. They went up and over it or even through it. It was the biggest single-day assault on the fence in a year and half.
And police say it was highly coordinated. CGTN was the only international media on the scene.
AL GOODMAN CEUTA, SPAIN "The latest mass assault on the fence here at Ceuta was early this day. You can see cuts on the foreheads, on the arms of some of these men. And many of them without shoes, having left their heavy shoes off to the side after making this assault."
The road leading to the migrant center, littered with the heavy clothing that protected them in the assault on the fence, which is topped by razor wire.
This Spanish Civil Guard video shows discarded clothing right at the fence.
Despite the protections, there were injuries. The Red Cross treated 130 migrants for cuts and fractures, and 16 went to hospital.
But while these migrants celebrated reaching Spain, authorities were analyzing new tactics used in this assault.
JUAN HERNANDEZ AIDE TO SPAIN'S TOP CEUTA OFFICIAL "It wasn't a typical assault, it was done differently. They even used machinery, electric saws, to cut through some sections of the fence."
ALFONSO CRUZADO SPANISH CIVIL GUARD "It's clear this assault had a high degree of pre-meditated violence. They threw quicklime at the Civil Guards, which burned various officers."
The Civil Guard video also shows the white powdery quicklime at the fence. Fifteen Civil Guards were injured, and five went to hospital.
The migrant center at Ceuta is overflowing. And Spain is, for now, a prime destination for African migrants, surpassing Italy and Greece, by sea and also, by land. Al Goodman, CGTN, Ceuta, Spain.
