German multinational conglomerate and elevator manufacturer Thyssenkrupp has opened the world's biggest elevator production plant in Zhongshan City, south China's Guangdong Province.
The test tower is one of the highest in the world at 248 meters, and will test high-speed and rope-free elevators.
CEO of Thyssenkrupp Heinrich Hiesinger said the establishment of the test tower is to bring the most innovative elevator technology to China.
The test tower can also be used to test "MULTI", the world’s first rope-free elevator, in the future. The system allows multiple cars to move in a single shaft vertically and horizontally. The advanced technology allows MULTI to open the door from all directions.

“With higher urbanization and density of cities growing continuously, we have invested in MULTI. The benefit of the creation is reducing the space. We should understand that up to 50 percent of each floor in office buildings is occupied by elevator shafts, so our product is a good business case for investors,” said Heinrich.
The MULTI system has received its first costumer order and is expected to be installed by 2020. However, there are challenges, including Washington's decision to impose tariffs on steel imports.
“As a global company, we support free trade, so we consider the tariff decision a wrong statement. We are really concerned about indirect impact, such as limiting free trade. We hope the political decision makers supported by WTO can really minimize the impact and hopefully can convince the US,” Heinrich stated.
