Huang Jiguang, a household name here, is seldom known to people outside of China. He sacrificed his life during the war so his comrades had a chance at victory. Tao Yuan visited a memorial hall in his hometown in Sichuan Province.

In October 1952, US forces launched an attack on a strategically important high ground known as Triangle Hill, or Shangganling. 19-year-old Liu Licai was a soldier in the 15th Corps of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army dispatched to defend Shangganling. He'd never seen a battle like this before.

LIU LICAI Soldier, 15th Corps, People's Volunteer Army "The machine guns swept across our trenches. I laid low every time I heard machine gun fire. They were pointed right at us. I ran that way. I avoided being shot in the head by just one step. The shrapnel sliced through my arm and shoulder."

It was one of the bloodiest episodes in the Korean War. Liu Licai's unit was tasked with destroying enemy blockhouses.

HUANG YONGJUN Huang Jiguang's Nephew "They organized many attacks and destroyed three enemy blockhouses. But they were stopped 15 meters from the last one, called Position 0. They couldn't close in on it because enemy fire was too fierce. And they needed an explosion squad to blow it up."

LIU LICAI Soldier, 15th Corps, People's Volunteer Army "I heard Huang Jiguang's name. I was shocked. I didn't know he's come."

Liu Licai and Huang Jiguang came from the same county, and joined the Army together. But in the chaos of war, Liu hadn't realized they were fighting alongside each other.

LIU LICAI Soldier, 15th Corps, People's Volunteer Army "Someone handed him a Bangalore and told him to pull on it like this."

HUANG YONGJUN Huang Jiguang's Nephew "He and two other soldiers closed in on the enemy position."

One soldier died on the way, another was badly wounded. Huang Jiguang was now on his own.

HUANG YONGJUN Huang Jiguang's Nephew "When he was five meters from Position 0, he threw his last weapon: a grenade. It exploded and the debris blocked the machine gun slit."

The troops behind dashed forward.

HUANG YONGJUN Huang Jiguang's Nephew "In the meantime, the enemy cleared the slit of debris. The machine gun delivered sweeping fire. Our soldiers fell in droves. My uncle Huang Jiguang looked back and saw his comrades die in front of him. His heart must have bled. He shouted something. But his company commander Wan Fulai couldn't hear it over the gunfire and explosions. The commander suddenly realized that Huang Jiguang was going to block the slit. He watched him hurl himself against the slit on the blockhouse. In a few short seconds, Company Commander Wan Fulai led the troops to seize Position 0."

TAO YUAN ZHONGJIANG, SICHUAN PROVINCE "Today, Huang Jiguang is remembered in this memorial hall in his hometown of Zhongjiang. Visitors from all across China come to this small county in southwest China's Sichuan Province to pay their respects to the young war hero."

Wang Zhiguo PLA Air Force Airborne Corps "He was only a 21-year-old boy. His patriotism inspires me."

"We can't forget our fallen heroes. Without their sacrifice, we wouldn't have the happy life we enjoy today."

Today, the 15th Corps, which Huang Jiguang and Liu Licai served in, has been reorganized into the People's Liberation Army Air Force Airborne Corps.

WANG ZHIGUO PLA Air Force Airborne Corps "Huang Jiguang's heroism runs deep in our blood. Inspired by him, our corps has been transformed again and again. We now fly high despite all difficulties. We have the confidence and ability to complete all missions and win against all enemies."
