Welcome back to China 24. Friday marks International Children's Day. Besides various celebrations across the country, many kids find their joy in front of a screen. However, experts warn that excessive use of electronic devices may not be a good idea. CGTN's Zheng Chunying goes over some of the risks.
A tablet in their hands, that's what happiness is all about for many children in China, games, cartoons, texting, chatting. Diving into cyberspace is attracting youngsters in various ways. According to one survey, over eighty percent of kids in China play with some sort of technology or devices such as smartphones, tablets, and computers. Thirty percent of these young digital users are even as young as three years old.
"Almost all of the kids I know love playing with electronic devices, they are often equipped with a smartphone and a tablet."
And while their children are obsessed with tech devices, some parents are also relying on the seeming benefits.
"It's so exhausting to look after the baby by myself all day and since the Ipad is able to quiet her immediately, I would rather let her play with it."
However, spending too much time with these devices could hurt a child's eyesight and may even hamper their performance in the classroom.
"Staring at the phone is even more harmful to kids' eyes than watching TV. Playing with the smartphone will triple the risk of short sightedness."
Besides, according to experts, human contact is lost when kids are too glued to their digital screens, they would have much less time outdoors running, playing and enjoying the three-dimensional world.
Needless to say, to find a healthy balance of media use for children while exploring the digital world remains a challenge for many. ZHENG CHUNYING, CGTN.
