Nintendo is working with Nvidia to port a selection of Wii and GameCube games onto the latter’s Android-powered Shield TV which has been released in China for the first time.
Game industry analyst Daniel Ahmad announced the move in a tweet on Tuesday.
According to Ahmad, users will be able to play games including New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Punch-Out! and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Other games like Metroid Prime and Super Mario Galaxy are making their way to the platform.
All games available on the console have been remastered in 1080p resolution for better visual experience on TV. They cost 68 yuan or about 10 dollars per title with Shield TV itself costing 1499 yuan, or roughly 225 US dollars.
The first-time-ever Wii games running on HD on TV intrigue many but the releases are only available in China. Nintendo takes the chance to make up on what it has been missing due to the ban on game consoles in China from 2000 to 2015.
The partnership could be a sign of what is to come to Nintendo Switch. After all, the console shares the same guts with Shield TV, the Tegra X1 system-on-chip. The company has yet to release a wide range of downloadable games for its Virtual Console service.
