So the season's biggest badminton event wrapped up with Chinese players claiming gold in men's doubles and mixed doubles. But the hosts were matched by rivals Japan, who topped the podium in men's singles and women's doubles, while Spain's Carolina Marin made history in women's singles. Damion Jones has the wrap-up.
China's biggest highlight on the last day of the BWF World Championships, was Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong defeating Wang Yilü and Huang Dongping in the mixed doubles final, with another duo from the host country, as well as a pair of Hong Kong shuttlers, completing the podium. The home nation's Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen also claimed top honors in men's doubles, but Japan dominated the women's division, as no PRC pairings made it past the round of eight.
ZHANG JUN CHINA DOUBLES COACH "We had an advantage in the bracket in mixed doubles, so the results were expected. But on the other hand, we saw Japan make a breakthrough at the World Championships. They had a favorable bracket in women's doubles, so to me, our team is more or less in the same pattern as in 1998. I think after this event, we will look at ways to improve in women's doubles, as Japan is really good at the moment. We have a long way to go, but we have some young and talented players, and I think after a few big events, they will grow up quickly."
Sunday's action in Nanjing was capped off by the men's singles title match, where Kento Momota beat crowd favorite Shi Yuqi in just 46 minutes, becoming the first Japanese player to win the title. But the runner-up's coach says this event has boosted his confidence, even in defeat.
XIA XUANZE CHINA SINGLES COACH "Actually I think the two players are even in skill, but Momota is more experienced than Shi, who needs to go through some big events to grow up."
In the remaining division, Carolina Marin of Spain emerged as the first woman to win three singles titles at this competition, while India's PV Sindhu, Hè Bingjiao of China, and Japan's Akane Yamaguchi rounded out the top four.
XIA XUANZE TURNING FOCUS TO ASIAN GAMES "I am satisfied with the women's performance at the moment, even though we did not win the title. I will keep encouraging them to stick to their strengths, and figure out what we need to improve in the future."
And as the Chinese team prepares to head to Indonesia next week, another big test looms on the horizon. DJ, CGTN.
