Telecom giant Huawei is pressing ahead with its global ambitions. Its subsidiary, HONOR, has unveiled its latest smartphone in London. Google has blocked Huawei from using Gmail and Maps on its Android phones to comply with a US government order. CGTN's Juliet Mann was at the HONOR 20 series launch event in London.
JULIET MANN LONDON "Here at the launch of Honor 20 series, the budget version of parent company Huawei's P30 range, the buzz is about the tech packed inside it, including four cameras. And even though Google has changed the way it deals with Huawei - which could mean those with future Huawei and Honor handsets might get denied access to certain apps and core Android services - the smartphone brand is fully prepared. Some analysts question that."
JOSHUA VERGARA TECH BLOGGER "Right now Huawei and Honor don't seem to have anything in place to replace android if it does go away which means it's incredibly paramount for these companies to remain in those partnerships because if Google takes away that licence then an integral part of all these handsets goes away. There's no evidence right now that Honor or Huawei have any rival what android provide to these handsets or even provide anything that could help consumers to use their handsets so right now it's really important that they come to some sort of agreement."
JULIET MANN LONDON "Huawei is in the eye of a political storm over next generation 5G mobile technology and what role they should have in it. Several countries have raised concerns about Huawei's alleged ties to the Chinese government. Not least, the United States – the Trump administration has banned the company from acquiring technology from US firms without government approval."
ZACH EMMANUEL CONSUMER TECHNOLOGY ANALYST, MINTEL "Even in the UK Mintel's status shows that Huawei's share has increased from 2% in 2018 to 7% in 2019 so again just in the UK alone you've seen that growth and of course with the growth across the globe it's really done well."
With a record 59 million phones shipped in the first quarter for 2019, Huawei has set its sights on becoming the world's biggest smartphone producer within a year.
JOSHUA VERGARA TECH BLOGGER "What I think they do really well is to provide specifications for pretty affordable price points. If the demographic HONOR is looking for are people more or less my age or even younger, then of course having an affordable handset is going to be really important and especially with the HONOR 20 Pro they've done a great job at providing good power and good performance."
But the big question is whether consumers will be spooked by the Google restrictions. If they are it could have huge implications for Huawei's business outside China. JM CGTN London.
