Catalonia's deposed leader Carles Puigdemont says he will not put himself forward as candidate to be reappointed as regional leader.

He made the announcement in a video posted on social media. The move is an attempt to unblock a political impasse, after weeks of tense negotiations between separatist parties. Puigdemont is in self-exile in Belgium and wanted in Spain. Late last year, he received the most votes among separatist candidates in a regional election called by Spanish authorities as a way out of the crisis.
