China has welcomed the outcome of the Singapore summit between US President Donald Trump and DPRK leader Kim Jong Un. Earlier, we talked to our reporter Zhao Yunfei who has more details.
After months of hurling insults and threats at each other, the leaders of the US and DPRK finally met in Singapore, and signed a document after their much-anticipated talks. Many celebrated the landmark meeting as it marks the first of its kind since the Korean War.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry says the country welcomes the fact that the US and DPRK have taken steps towards the path of politically resolving the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue.
WANG YI CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTER "The fact that the leaders from the US and DPRK are sitting down and having an equal-footed dialogue, this in itself is of a great significance and a historic moment. China of course welcomes such a development because this has been an objective we have been looking forward to and have worked towards over the years."
Meanwhile, the foreign ministry's spokesperson says China is committed to realizing long-lasting peace and stability of the peninsula.
GENG SHUANG CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESPERSON "As the most important party involved in the Korean Peninsula issue and a contracting party of the Korean Armistice Agreement, China has a responsiblity and an obligation to play a role in the process of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula. China is committed to the peace process, to promoting denuclearization, to setting up a peace mechanism and maintaining stability."
If we look at history, China has been committed to peace talks on the Korean Peninsula issue. In 2003, Beijing hosted the first six-party talks. In 2017, China proposed the "dual suspension" approach, meaning that the DPRK should suspend its nuclear and missile activities in exchange for the halting of large-scale US-South Korea military drills. In addition, China has made a significant sacrifice in implementing UN Security Council sanctions against the DPRK, given the fact that Beijing is Pyongyang's biggest trading partner.
ZHAO YUNFEI BEIJING "China's implementation of the sanctions has helped make the Security Council resolution more effective, and China's dual suspension proposal has created the basic conditions for the improvement of inter-Korean relations. So it's no wonder that China is pleased with the fruitful result from Trump-Kim summit."
